The competent Russian bodies have once again detected that the US secret services carry out global systemic surveillance of its citizens and those of other countries, which involves American information technology (IT) companies, says a note from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
This time, the data was secretly collected through software vulnerabilities in US-produced mobile phones, confirming Moscow’s repeated warning that US intelligence services have been using IT corporations for decades to collect data from Internet users without their knowledge, he adds.
The statement recalled the approach formulated by Russia about the need to bring order in this area and develop rules of conduct in the digital space of a universal nature “based on respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms and the sovereign equality of States.”
The Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly approved, in January 2021, the Declaration on the violation of freedom of expression by US global internet companies, through which it called for the development of an international convention to regulate their activities.
The note also points to the presentation to the UN of evidence about the practices of the US secret services and companies from that country that operate in international information security, and urged all interested parties to establish understandable and fair regulatory mechanisms. in the digital field that are mandatory for all countries and, particularly, for designers of information communication technologies.
No State can abuse its technological capabilities in such a sensitive area, such as access to the personal data of smartphone users, the statement concludes.
