Russia fears the acceleration of Ukraine’s counteroffensive on the southern front, in the Zaporizhzhia region. The signal is detected by British intelligence, which outlines the picture in the crucial phase of the war. “A turning point in the Ukrainian counteroffensive worries Russia. For this reason Moscow is building concrete fortifications to further defend the trenches”, the analysis by British intelligence, which also refers to the news reported by the Ukrainian mayor of Melitopol Ivan Federov. According to the mayor, “Russian forces were building additional fortifications on the Orikhiv axis. Complex two-story underground bunkers with tunnels and trenches are being built in Novopokrovka.”

“Defensive fortifications have been built in Tokmak and trenches have been filled with concrete – continues British intelligence – Russian officers have also begun to evacuate their families from Tokmak. Fortifications have been observed south of Robotyne. The bunkers will add further protection for Russian soldiers and command and control elements from Ukrainian heavy artillery and unmanned aerial vehicle attacks.”

Russia, the weapons promised by Kim Jong-un arrive

Meanwhile, three weeks after Kim Jong-Un’s visit to Russia and meeting with President Vladimir Putin, North Korea has started providing military aid to Russia. This was reported by CBS News, which quotes an American official according to whom Pyongyang has started artillery transfers towards Moscow. It is unclear whether the support is limited or part of a broader supply, the US network said. It is not even known if and what North Korea will receive in return.

In September, Putin and Kim discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation between Russia and North Korea in several areas. North Korea, according to reconstructions, has agreed to supply arms and ammunition to Russia for the ongoing war in Ukraine and could receive, above all, technology useful for improving missile launch systems, in particular those for use on submarines. Also on the menu is support for the development of technology to be applied to satellites.

Pyongyang, in particular, produces artillery pieces, such as 122 mm rocket launchers, which can be used immediately by Moscow’s forces because they are compatible with vehicles and equipment used in Ukraine. The supplies at the moment do not seem destined to have a significant impact on war operations, but they would partially resolve – at least in some sectors – supply problems.

Zelensky: “Russia will try to attack infrastructure”

Ukraine, meanwhile, is preparing to face Russia’s next moves. President Volodymyr Zelensky knows what Moscow’s objectives are: ”This winter Russia will try to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure”. “We must win this winter, overcome all difficulties and ensure protection for our people,” he says, adding that ”we are working with partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and our energy system”.

Zelensky underlines that ”this week there have been many important decisions by Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and others” and ”Ukraine greatly appreciates any sign of support and solidarity”. The Ukrainian leader states that ”our victory over Russian terrorism will be a common victory of all people in the world who share our belief that evil and hatred must always lose. Always. This must be a global rule set in stone. And it certainly will be.”
