by time news

The Russian government has completely banned the entry into the country of citizens of nine countries in Africa and Hong Kong, canceling the previously existing exceptions for diplomats and other categories of citizens, the corresponding order was published on the portal of legal information. Earlier, the headquarters imposed restrictions on air traffic with these countries due to the spread of the omicron coronavirus strain in them.

Prior to this, restrictions on entry to Russia did not apply to holders of diplomatic and service passports and such visas, as well as to the crews of air, sea and river vessels, train and locomotive crews. According to a government order, such exceptions no longer apply to citizens of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Eswatini and South Africa.

The Omicron strain was discovered in southern Africa in the first decade of November. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this variant of the virus has 32 mutations – more than all previously known ones. These changes increase the infectivity of omicron, enhance its binding to receptors, potentially increase the level of penetration into human cells and affect the increase in infectivity, said Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor. According to the latest WHO data, omicron was found in 57 countries around the world. In Russia, two cases of infection with a new strain were registered.
