The calculations of the coastal missile complex “Bastion” of the Pacific Fleet for the first time took over duty on the Kuril island of Matua, the press service of the Eastern Military District for the Pacific Fleet reports. A military town for personnel was set up on the island and equipment for posts was installed.
“On this remote island in the central part of the Kuril ridge, the Pacific Fleet’s missilemen will carry out a round-the-clock watch to monitor the adjacent water area and pouring zones,” it was reported.
It is noted that an autonomous military town has been deployed on the island, in which work has been completed on the improvement of premises intended for year-round service and residence of personnel, “equipment of technical posts has been installed, storage facilities for equipment and materiel have been deployed, entrances to launch sites have been equipped.” The personnel began to be on duty.
Coastal missile systems “Bal” and “Bastion” have been deployed on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir, whose belonging to Russia is not recognized by Japan, since the fall of 2016. The island of Matua is not among the controversial ones, but during the Second World War it was of great strategic importance for Japan, it housed a large naval base of the country.
