Against the background of the emergence of a potentially dangerous “omicron” variant of the coronavirus, Russia obliged those arriving from South Africa and neighboring countries to observe a two-week quarantine. The rule comes into force immediately, said on Thursday, December 2, the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova on the air of the radio “Komsomolskaya Pravda”.

In addition, those who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 and who have not undergone the disease will have to pass a PCR test for coronavirus. According to Popova, we can only talk about a small number of people, since Russia does not have direct flights with South Africa. People entering from other countries are not required to comply with quarantine, Popova said.

At the same time, according to the department, the “omicron” variant of the coronavirus has not yet been detected in Russia. “The protection measures are working,” Popova added and indicated that random testing is being carried out at airports arriving from countries in which this mutation has already been identified.

During the day, 33.4 thousand new infections were detected

Meanwhile, over the past day in Russia, 33,389 new infected with coronavirus were detected, the total number of cases increased to 9,703,107, the federal operational headquarters said. The number of deaths from the consequences of COVID-19 disease per day increased by 1221 to 277 640. As of November 26, 60 795 702 residents of the Russian Federation were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, 69 468 166 people were vaccinated with at least one component.

The information disseminated by the headquarters about the deaths from coronavirus in Russia differs significantly from other official Russian data. So, according to Rosstat, which, unlike the federal headquarters, also takes into account deaths with COVID-19 as a concomitant disease, in August alone, almost 50 thousand people died, at the time of death who were sick with covid. The operational headquarters in August daily reported about 800 deaths.

The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation also records a significant excess mortality. In particular, 7237 deaths were registered in Moscow in July, which is 6464 more than in August 2020. Thus, the increase in mortality in Moscow was 60%.

“Omicron” -a variant of the coronavirus

Variant B.1.1.529 coronavirus was first identified in Botswana and South Africa in the second half of November 2021. It has been designated as “of concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to scientists from South Africa, due to the unusually high number of mutations, it can be even more infectious than the “delta” variant, which has recently become especially widespread in the world.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) assessed the threat of this variant spreading in the EU countries from “high to very high”. At the same time, scientists have not yet analyzed the specific consequences of infection with the omicron.

Meanwhile, the national association of South African health workers SAMA reported that according to the first results of monitoring the condition of patients in whom the infection was confirmed, “omicron” does not lead to serious complications. At the same time, the head of SAMA Angelique Coetzee emphasized that the studies of this version of SARS-CoV-2 are still at a very early stage.
