Russia plans to start production of a new ‘Drel’ cluster bomb in 2024, Tass news agency reported, citing Rostec, the Russian state arms manufacturer. The bombs are designed to be dropped by aircraft at a safe distance from their targets. The bombs then use a guided flight path to precisely deliver a payload that Western analysts believe would be cluster munition. Russia already has glide bombs in its arsenal and has used them against Ukraine.

The ‘Drel’ bombs are intended to be used against armored vehicles, ground structures and anti-aircraft defences, Tass reported. According to available information, the aerial bomb carries up to 15 combat elements, which hit the target. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) had reported that Russia reduced air activity and the use of glide bombs after the Ukrainian army shot down three Su-34 fighter-bombers on December 21 and 22.

Putin: “We are self-sufficient in every respect”

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Russia has demonstrated to the whole world that it is self-sufficient in every sense. “The main thing that we have demonstrated to ourselves and to the whole world is that Russia is a self-sufficient country in every respect. It is strong, moving forward and confidently looking into the future. This is undoubtedly the most important achievement of the last year,” the president underlined in a meeting with residents of Anadyr, Russia’s easternmost city.

“Even the main European economies are going through difficult times – observed Putin – We are growing and they are declining. Well we are not here to talk about these details. This does not make us happy but the fact remains that they have become dependent on us more than we depended on them. The problems they are involved in cannot even be compared to our problems.”
