Russia launched an attack with drones on Wednesday morning in the port city of Odessa, in the south of Ukraine, but no victims were registered at the moment, the authorities indicated. “In the night, the enemy carried out an attack with drones of the type Shahed-136 in the Odessa region,” Yuriy Kruk, head of the district military administration, said in a statement on Telegram.

Kruk said Ukraine’s air defenses destroyed most of the drones, but some civilian infrastructure was damaged.

“According to preliminary information, there were no casualties. Measures are being taken to contain the fire. Units of the emergency service and other structures are working on the spot,” he said.

Los Shahed-136 are self-exploding drones of Iranian production that can be programmed to automatically fly to pre-specified GPS coordinates where they detonate their payload.

The Russian drone industry was affected by international sanctions, which, together with the neutralization of numerous devices since the start of the war, has led Moscow to import these devices from Iran.

The Odessa area, on the shores of the Black Sea, it was a favorite vacation destination for many Ukrainians and Russians before President Vladimir Putin launched his troops against the former Soviet republic in February of last year.

Since the start of the invasion, the city has been shelled several times by Russian forces. It also suffered a drone attack two weeks ago that caused some damage.

In January, UNESCO classified the historic center of Odessa as a World Heritage Site in danger.
