Russia: Power and control struggles between senior commanders

by time news

Shocks at the top of the Russian army: another general was removed from his post – General Alexander Lapin who commanded the center sector in the campaign in Ukraine.

Western experts told WAR ZONE that so far five generals, senior commanders who led the invasion of Ukraine in February and commanded four of the army’s main military districts, have been dismissed.

According to estimates, General Lappin belonged to a group of senior commanders, including Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who were involved in a power and control struggle with nationalist commanders.

It was learned that the commander of the Wagner force, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and the commander of the Chechen forces, fighting with the Russian army, Ramzan Kadyrov, were the ones who criticized General Lappin and led to his removal, claiming that he commanded his troops from afar and was not at the front.

As well as, he did not correctly activate the armored forces he commanded. In response to the criticism, photographs of General Lappin with soldiers in Ukraine were published, but this did not prevent his impeachment this week.

Three weeks ago, the commander of the air forces, General Sergey Sorobikin, took command of all army units in Ukraine. The exchange of commanders and dismissals of generals indicate serious failures in the operation of the army since the invasion of Ukraine in February of this year.
