Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in footage released today by his department that production of military drones in Russia has increased over the past year, although some technical issues are still unresolved, Reuters reported.

“The necessary production capacities have already been created so that we can successfully solve most of the tasks facing us today,” he said during a tour of a plant in the Volga republic of Udmurtia.

In the footage, Shoigu says in a meeting with officials that the use of artificial intelligence in unmanned aerial vehicles and the conduct of electronic warfare must be resolved.

Russia has made extensive use of drones in its nearly two-year military campaign in Ukraine, but has often had to rely on cheap Iranian-made Shahed drones.

In recent months, Moscow has claimed that its military industry has increased production of this type of equipment, amid Russia’s attempts to find a favorable way out of the impasse on the battlefield in Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian commanders, drones will be crucial to gaining the upper hand in the conflict, and military analysts say the increased use of these aircraft on the battlefield makes it difficult for ground troops to advance.
