Russia ranks second in VPN downloads

In March-July, Russia ranked second in the world in terms of downloading VPN services: in the first three weeks of July, such services were installed in the country more than 12 million times, RBC reported, citing statistics from the AppMagic mobile app market analysis service. In January of this year, Russia ranked 16th with 2 million downloads, and in July it was 15th with 2.7 million.

For the past six months, India has been the number one in terms of VPN downloads, while Pakistan, Indonesia and the United States have also been in the top five.

Analysts cited the Lifetime Downloads indicator – the cumulative number of downloads from app stores from 2015 to the present. For the most popular services among Russians, this figure was: VPN – Super Unlimited Proxy – 14.36 million downloads, Turbo VPN – Secure VPN Proxy – 12.8 million, Secure VPN-Safer Internet – 12.08 million downloads, VPN Proxy Master – Safer Vpn and 1.1.1.1: Faster & Safer Internet – 10.8 million each. This is from 5 to 20% of Lifetime Downloads of the listed services in the world, experts noted.

According to the Google Trends service, which evaluates user queries in a search engine, the peak of the popularity of requests with the word VPN in Russia was March 13-19, and then it decreased with small bursts on May 29 – June 4 and July 17-23. Most often, VPNs were searched on Google in the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad and Yaroslavl regions. According to the service, requests related to the American services 1.1.1.1 and Lantern, Canadian Psiphon and Pakistani Super VPN have become super popular.

Representatives of MTS, MegaFon, VimpelCom and Rostelecom did not comment on how the traffic of Russian users’ VPN services has changed over the past month or year. The growth in downloads can be associated both with an increase in their audience amid the blocking of popular resources, and with restrictions on popular VPNs, Ivan Begtin, head of the ANO Tsifrovaya Kultura, is sure.
