DISPATCH — As part of the “initial military training”, Russian high school students will receive combat drone piloting lessons from the start of the next school year. This was revealed by the Ministry of Education in its program, published Monday, August 21.

As AFP reports, the program stipulates that Russian teenagers will be able to familiarize themselves with “the means of military use of drones”, or even how to “conduct reconnaissance missions using a drone”. They will also have the opportunity to “carry out concrete drone piloting actions”, as well as learn ways to ward off “adversary drones”.

These new courses will be included as part of the “initial military training”, which already existed in Soviet times. It then fell into disuse, before being relaunched for the next academic year in 2023. In addition to drones, it provides familiarization with weapons of war such as the Kalashnikov assault rifle, and has at least 140 hours of study.

“The introduction of such a subject in schools will make it possible to systematically prepare citizens for a possible confrontation with the enemy”, explained in November 2022 the parliamentarian Sergei Mironov, at the origin of the initiative.

The school week thus begins with the national anthem and a flag-raising ceremony. Then, “discussions on what is important” take place, in particular to evoke the hostilities in Ukraine.
