8:30 am: Russian Defense Minister inspects forces in the Arctic
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu traveled to the Arctic to inspect the armed forces deployed there, his ministry said on Saturday, in a region where Moscow has strengthened its military posture in recent years.
He “inspected remote Northern Fleet garrisons in the Arctic” and prepared soldiers to “defend particularly important installations” in this strategic area for Moscow, the ministry said. In particular, he visited the archipelago of Novaya Zembla, in the far north of Russia.
The minister and the head of Russia’s nuclear agency Rosatom, Alexei Likachev, also inspected a major nuclear weapons testing ground, where the Soviet Union had carried out almost all of its bomb tests.
