Vientiane: Russia has announced the Eurasian NATO during the ASEAN summit. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who attended the meeting, said that many ASEAN countries have expressed interest in Russia’s idea of creating a new security structure in Eurasia. He said that member countries understand that the West is emphasizing narrow formats within ASEAN to control China and Russia. This is being seen as a response to the US-led NATO. The US created NATO to counter Russia during the Cold War. This alliance currently includes 32 countries. The newest member country of this alliance is Sweden.

America accused of playing a trick against China-Russia

“The West is still pushing for narrow formats with a clear goal, it does not hide it, that their focus is on containing China and Russia. Our ASEAN partners understand this well and have shown interest in the initiative of (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, which I have already mentioned, a Eurasian security system that will be indivisible and equal,” Lavrov said at a press conference following the Russia-ASEAN meeting and the East Asia Summit ministerial meeting in Laos. The Russian foreign minister said the talks discussed the need to create an indivisible security system for all countries of the Eurasian continent, with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union being good examples of such efforts.

Know the Members of ASEAN Countries

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) consists of ten Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. East Timor is set to become the eleventh ASEAN country in the near future.

Russia is also worried about the US-South Korea agreement

Lavrov said Russia is concerned about the US and South Korea’s plans to carry out a joint nuclear strike plan. “Another worrying aspect is that the United States has recently signed an agreement with South Korea on a joint nuclear plan,” he said. Lavrov also said, “So far, we have not even received an explanation of what this (agreement) means, but we have no doubt that it causes additional concern.”
