The assassination of the last imperial family is still the subject of debate in Russia. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, the tsar, along with Tsarina Alexandra, Tsarevich Alexei, his sisters Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia, their doctor and three servants were shot by a group of gunmen led by the Bolshevik general Yakov Yurovski. They were brought down to the basement with the excuse that they were going to be attacked. There they were executed.

In 1998 a state funeral was held for the royal family. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized the Romanov family two years later, representing all the Bolshevik martyrs, 25 million deaths attributable to Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin.
