The Russian authorities ordered to suspend the import of live animals and meat from Kazakhstan. The decision is caused by the spread of the FMD virus in this country, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) explained on Wednesday, January 12. This includes companion animals, as well as circus and zoo animals.

In addition, it is forbidden to import milk and dairy products from Kazakhstan to the territory of the Russian Federation that have not undergone heat treatment, feed and feed additives of animal and vegetable origin, wool, skins, leather, as well as used equipment for keeping and slaughtering animals.

The Russian side has identified problems with meat against the backdrop of growing political instability in the neighboring state. A few hours earlier, Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev announced the planned start of an organized withdrawal of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) forces on January 13. Tokayev had promised two days earlier that this withdrawal would take no more than 10 days.

The CSTO military contingent was sent to the republic in connection with the massive protests that erupted after the increase in prices for liquefied gas. On behalf of Russia, several airborne brigades, among others, participate in the “peacekeeping mission” in Kazakhstan.
