Three Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defenses overnight from Friday to Saturday. Rarely targeted since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian capital has been targeted several times recently.

Russian air defenses shot down a drone approaching Moscow overnight, the capital’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said early Saturday. An attack confirmed by the Russian state agency Tass.

“Last night, the air defense forces destroyed a drone approaching Moscow in the Istrinskii district,” he wrote on Telegram. According to initial information, “there are no casualties or damage. Emergency services are on site,” he added.

On Wednesday, a drone crashed into a skyscraper in Moscow’s business district, destroying a window with no casualties, authorities said. It was then the sixth consecutive day of drone attacks on Moscow and its region.

Another Ukrainian drone was shot down on Saturday morning by Russian air defense in the Chebekino district of the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, according to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry. At around 8 a.m. Paris time, “an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack with a drone against sites on Russian territory was prevented”, the ministry said on Telegram. Another Ukrainian drone was shot down in the same province in the afternoon, according to the same source.

A grenade launcher attack

Russia also accused Ukrainian forces of shelling a village in the Belgorod region with grenade launchers on Saturday, the strike leaving six civilians injured, according to a new report from local authorities.

“The fragmentation grenades targeted private houses” as well as a store in the village of Urazovo, in the Valuysk district, wrote on Telegram the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov. According to him, the strike left six injured, one of whom was hospitalized “in very serious condition”. Several houses and cars were also damaged by the strike, according to the same source.

These announcements come as Ukrainian drone attacks and bombings of Russian regions bordering Ukraine have increased in recent months, as have other regions of Russia, including very recently annexed Crimea. On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down 42 Ukrainian drones there.
