The Russian government is considering providing Yemen’s Houthis with P-800 Oniks anti-ship missiles. The supersonic weapon could be used to attack US-led coalition ships guarding commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
“Bulgarian Military” writes about this.
The move is believed to be part of the Kremlin’s strategy to strengthen ties with anti-Western groups in response to political isolation following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. However, there has been no official confirmation of this information from the Russian government.
The P-800 Oniks missile, known to NATO as the SS-N-26 Strobile, is capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 2.5 and is equipped with an active radar homing system, making it effective at hitting naval targets at ranges of up to 300 km. If this plan is implemented, it could significantly affect the security of the Red Sea shipping lanes, as the Houthis would be able to strike ships at a significant distance from the shore.
The Houthis regularly fire on ships in the Red Sea to protest Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip. They have said they will fire on all ships heading to Israeli ports. However, they have also targeted ships that have no ties to the Jewish state.
Earlier, Cursor wrote that Yemeni Houthis “quietly” launched a cruise missile attack on Haifa.
