Russia to support India bid for permanent seat at UN Security Council Permanent position in the Security Council

Russia has announced its support for India becoming a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country, Sergey Lavrov. The most important international body of the world, the United Nations, is considered to be its Security Council.

The Security Council is the main decision-making body on international security, military, foreign policy, and nuclear weapons policy. Currently there are 5 countries which are permanent members of this Security Council namely USA, UK, France, Russia and China.

In this case, India has recently been actively working to get permanent membership of the Security Council. For this, the support of the world countries is gathering. Even last week, the US pledged to support India as a permanent member. In this case, Russia, which is the polar opposite of America in policy, has also supported India. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this while addressing the 77th Summit of the United Nations. He opined that major changes are needed to democratize the Security Council.

In particular, he said that leading countries like India and Brazil should be made permanent members. While the current permanent members USA and Russia have supported India, France and Britain will also support India. Meanwhile, China alone is expected to try to block India from becoming a full member.
