Although Girkin is known for his extreme views and has been convicted of war crimes, he has emerged as one of the voices criticizing Russia’s military strategy in Ukraine. Gerkin often published, on his Telegram account, sharp criticisms against the leaders of the war. Last Saturday, he even referred to Defense Minister Rossi’s statement, and wrote that “his statement does not go so far as to help the Russian forces in the war. The statement in which he promised to increase the number of soldiers and ammunition is not really meaningful.” According to him, “In order for the soldiers to be able to use weapons, it is necessary to increase the output. The army leaders are idiots who do not understand what they say and write.”

He also wrote in the message, that “the Russian population will continue to ‘swallow’ the statements of the Russian officials that the war is really going on as they wanted. The time has come for the Russian public to start wondering why the war continues despite the false claims. If everything is so good with us, why is the war going on already 14 Months? The losses on our side are high, and victory is very far from us.”

Girkin’s criticism comes against the backdrop of assessments among British intelligence that Russia’s attack in eastern Ukraine is progressing slowly, and that the “special” attack on the city of Akhmat has failed. This, after the former Ukrainian general, Victor Mozenko, warned that the Russian army might launch a new offensive during the summer, following Moscow’s lack of success in the near field. Mozhenko, who previously served as the chief of the general staff of the Ukrainian army, was interviewed by the newspaper Fakty, and believed that it is possible that the Russian attack will be carried out in the month of August.
