The Russian Federal Security Service announced, “The killing of 4 employees of the Volgograd Prison, out of 8 who were held hostage by the prisoners.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “the Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Arkady Gostev, informed him of the situation in the prison in the Volgograd region where the hostage-taking incident took place today, Friday.”

“The director of the penitentiary service informed me about the developments in one of the prisons in the Volgograd region,” Putin said at the beginning of a meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council.

Putin instructed Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev to “submit a report on the situation in the Volgograd prison.”

The president added that he “will also hear reports from the leadership of the Russian National Guard and other security officials on the developments of the prison incident.”

The Russian Federal Service for the Enforcement of Penalties said, “A number of convicts in prison No. 19 took prison staff hostage during a meeting of the disciplinary committee, and measures are being taken to free them.” According to the information, “four hostages were taken, and two people were killed, a prison staff member and a prisoner,” and three other people were injured, including staff and prisoners.”

“The four prisoners in their 20s, two of them born in Tajikistan and two of them born in Uzbekistan, were reportedly sentenced in 2019, 2022 and 2023 to between six and eight years in prison on charges of drug trafficking and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm. Security documents containing photos of the alleged hostage-takers have been circulating online,” the report said.
