The Houthis were supposed to receive missiles and military equipment from the Russian army to continue their attacks. However, the US and Saudi Arabia found “leverage” that made the Houthis abandon this idea.

CNN reports this.

Two sources said Saudi Arabia, which fought a bitter war with the Houthis for years before brokering a fragile U.S.-backed truce in 2022, warned Russia against supplying weapons to its adversaries after learning of the plans. The U.S. has also asked Saudi Arabia to help persuade Moscow not to hand over weapons to the Houthis.

Although the arms delivery was delayed, Russia sent troops to Yemen for three days in late July to support the Houthis.

U.S. officials observed Russian troops from ships in the southern Red Sea disembarking on boats provided by the Houthis and heading to Yemen.

It is stated that the Russians saw arming and advising the Houthis as “a way to get back at the Biden administration for its decision to allow Ukraine to strike Russian territory using weapons provided by the United States.” However, despite the fact that the arms supply operation was disrupted, Russia deployed a military contingent to Yemen to provide advice to the Houthis.

The Houthis began their near-daily attacks on shipping through the Red Sea in November 2023, prompting the US and UK to launch several rounds of air strikes on Yemeni territory to try to dismantle their weapons infrastructure.

Let us recall that the Houthis also act as a destabilizing factor in the conflict between Iran and Israel. Supported by Tehran, the Houthis threaten to strike the Israeli Mediterranean ports of Ashdod, Ashkelon and Haifa, as well as the port of Eilat on the Red Sea.
