Mikhail Lobanov has been released, but the threats persist.

—————————————————————-

On the morning of May 18, the Moscow police arrested Mikhail Lobanov, a trade unionist from Moscow University, a left-wing activist and a doctor of mathematics. Mikhail Lobanov opposes the invasion of Ukraine, defends political prisoners and fights for labor and environmental rights.
His arrest is part of a long-running campaign by the authorities against Mikhail Lobanov. On June 7, 2022, he was arrested by the police for his “No to war” banner and sentenced to 15 days in jail for his anti-war statements. Russian state propaganda media and pro-war Telegram channels launched a smear campaign against him. He and his wife, Alexandra Zapolskaya, were repeatedly harassed. On December 29, 2021, the police forced their way into his Lobanov flat. They beat him and detained him for 15 days on charges of “disobeying the police”. He has just been arrested again after another late-night police raid on his apartment.
Mikhail Lobanova’s legal representative stated that the raid was carried out by the police under two formal charges: “dissemination of false information about the army” and “advocacy of terrorism.” These charges carry prison terms of up to seven years.
The member organizations of the International Trade Union Network for Solidarity and Struggles demand the release of Mikhail Lobanov, an end to the pressures on him and Alexandra Zapolskaya, and the release of all political prisoners in Russia.
