Russia said it would demand an explanation from the South Korean government after dozens of its citizens were denied disembarkation from a passenger ship at the country’s Donghae port.

The Russian Embassy in South Korea told TASS on the 22nd, “We are investigating the circumstances of the incident. We plan to immediately contact the Korean authorities and request an explanation regarding the circumstances of the incident.”

According to Novosti Vladivostok, a local newspaper in Primorsky Krai, the previous day, a passenger ship that departed from Vladivostok arrived at Donghae Port, but 20 to 30 Russian nationals on board were denied entry into South Korea.

The passenger was denied entry by the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Korea despite having received a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA).

According to reports, the South Korean government is preventing them from disembarking and providing them with food while they wait for repatriation flights to Russia.

One passenger who was denied entry said he had received an electronic travel authorization and was confused as to why he was not allowed to enter South Korea.

He testified that Korean authorities forced him to sign a document explaining the procedure for filing an objection, but refused to talk about filing an objection. He added that he was also made to sign a document that was a sort of agreement to live in a cabin that was sealed off from the outside world until the departure of his return flight.

Last week, 14 people also reported experiencing the same thing.

Even if an electronic travel authorization is issued, Korean authorities have the right to refuse entry to Russian nationals. Issuing an electronic travel authorization does not guarantee entry, and the final decision on entry is made by the immigration authorities at the destination.

Even if the Korean government refuses entry to foreigners, it is not obligated to provide a reasonable response. Nor is the Korean government obligated to provide them with food and necessities.
