Zurich: Russia’s occupation of Ukraine is a major setback for the sports world. FIFA Ban Russia, the governing body of FIFA, has decided to suspend Russia from qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar later this year and the Women’s Euro Cup in June. FIFA has banned Russia indefinitely.
FIFA’s move comes as Russia prepares for the play – offs to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. FIFA has taken strong action against Russia in the wake of allegations that it is taking a soft approach. FIFA’s move follows a recommendation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in international competitions.
Earlier, FIFA banned Russia from playing in the name of the country and using the national flag or anthem in tournaments. However, FIFA has taken drastic action in response to comments from football federations in various countries that action against Russia has been reduced. UEFA has also decided to expel Russian club Spartak Moscow from the Europa League. Meanwhile, UEFA has decided to cancel its sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom.
FIFA and UEFA have issued a joint statement saying that the world of football will work together to declare solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic are the first countries to play in the World Cup qualifiers. Following this, France, England and the United States made it clear that they would not compete with Russia under any circumstances. Russia will not be able to compete in the Women’s Euro Cup in June this year, as European nations have banned UEFA in solidarity with FIFA’s action.
