Kiev: Russia’s cyber attack on Ukraine, along with armed attacks on the border. Many Sourcar websites have been hacked. Cyber attacks are also taking place in the banking sector.
As of Wednesday morning, the websites of several banks in Ukraine were down. Some Sourcar websites had a similar problem. It is alleged that the websites were disrupted by a DIDOS (distributed denial-of-service / DDoS) attack by Russian hackers.
Didos Attack’s method is to deactivate a website by sending more service requests than it can afford.
According to Ukrainian sources, the cyber attack is unprecedented. Digital Transformation Minister Mikhail Fedorov says there are widespread didos attacks. The minister’s response was via telegram.
Internet connectivity company NetBlocks says the attack intensified on Wednesday afternoon, with more websites being attacked.
The BBC News reports that the websites of the Ukrainian military and banks were restored shortly after the attack. The BBC reports that the attack was expected by Ukraine.
The United Kingdom and the United States have blamed Russian hackers for the attack, but Russia has denied the allegations. Ukraine’s cyber systems were similarly attacked in January. Seventy percent of government websites were hacked that day. The message that hackers put on the home pages of many websites was to prepare for the worst.
Russia’s policy is to use armed aggression on the one hand and cyber attacks on the other. Russia made similar moves in 2008 against Georgia and in 2014 against Crimea.
