Today, Monday, in Baku, extensive talks were held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as part of Putin’s state visit to Azerbaijan.

At the beginning of the talks, the Russian President praised “the level of Russian-Azerbaijani relations,” stressing that “the talks in the expanded framework are an opportunity to determine steps to develop relations between the two countries for the next stage.”

Putin pointed out that “all agreements concluded in 2022 are being implemented, as the extensive work contributes to determining future steps in the relations between the two countries.”

For his part, Aliyev praised “bilateral relations,” noting “their always positive pace of development,” and said: “We are committed to strengthening cooperation in all fields, and we are confident that your visit is an important step on this path.”

Putin arrived in the capital Baku yesterday, Sunday, as part of a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. Russia and Azerbaijan have historical and strategic relations dating back to the time of the former Soviet Union and during the time of the Russian Empire, where Russia played a pivotal role in Azerbaijan’s independence from the Persian state, and recognized it as an independent state following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Moscow and Baku established new relations on April 4, 1992, which continue to be strengthened within the framework of a strategic alliance and partnership. Cooperation between the two countries is based on 170 treaties and agreements in all areas, including 50 economic agreements.
