The head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in the Czech Republic visited the Russian citizen Alexander Franchetti, who was detained in Prague, TASS reported, citing the press secretary of the embassy Nikolai Bryakin.
“The head of the consular section of the embassy visited the Russian citizen Alexander Franchetti, who was detained in Prague. Now the embassy continues to be in contact with him, his relatives and the legal representative of the defense, ”Bryakin said.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that the detention of the man was the result of the work of Ukrainian and Czech law enforcement officers “to bring Alexander Franchetti to justice for committing a number of crimes against our state, in particular participation in the Russian occupation of Crimea” (quote from RBC-Ukraine). The Ukrainian authorities are working on completing the necessary procedures for transferring Franchetti to justice in Ukraine, he added.
Yesterday, the Russian embassy in the Czech Republic announced the arrest of Franchetti at the international airport in Prague. According to a TASS source, he was detained on the basis of an international arrest warrant issued by Ukraine. Alexander Molokhov, head of the working group on international legal issues at the permanent representation of Crimea under the President, told RIA Novosti that Franchetti was one of the participants in the events of the so-called “Crimean Spring”, as a result of which the peninsula became part of Russia in March 2014.
