Russian Emergency App Hacked to Broadcast False Warnings

It appears that the air raid alert application was subjected to enemy interference, the Ukrainian Air Force announced after digital interference triggered unwarranted panic over a phantom radioactive hazard.

Russia’s emergency services app suffered a widespread cyberattack Monday, allowing unauthorized actors to broadcast false emergency warnings to citizens. The breach coincided with coordinated drone strikes, power infrastructure disruptions across multiple regions, and similar digital interference targeting air raid alert systems in Ukraine.

Digital infrastructure across the region faced simultaneous pressure on Monday as state agencies dealt with both cyber intrusions and physical strikes. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that its official mobile application, widely relied upon by residents to receive alerts about incoming drone strikes and natural hazards, had been compromised. According to the emergency ministry statement published via Telegram, the digital intrusion enabled outside actors to push misleading information straight to citizen devices.

Emergency App Compromised by Outside Actors

Technical teams immediately began working to patch the security vulnerability and restore normal operations, though officials have not yet publicly disclosed the precise volume of users affected or the ultimate origin of the attack. Government statistical agency Rosstat also experienced digital disruptions stretching from October 29 through November 1, though authorities confirmed that no agency databases were breached during that incident.

Cross-Border Cyber Interference and Air Raid Disruptions

The cyber disruptions extended beyond Russian emergency software. Across the border, Ukraine’s air force reported that its general public warning application for aerial bombardments was similarly breached.

It appears that the air raid alert application was subjected to enemy interference, the Ukrainian Air Force stated.

The air force quickly moved to calm residents through subsequent broadcasts.

There is no radiation threat whatsoever! Stay calm and follow our updates via our channel! the Ukrainian Air Force stated.

Overnight Drone Strikes and Energy Grid Impacts

The digital intrusions unfolded concurrently with heavy physical combat overnight. Ukrainian officials noted that Russian forces struck power grids across four distinct regions, cutting electricity to hundreds of thousands of residential homes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that Moscow aims to exploit dwindling supplies of ballistic missile interceptors.

Industrial Targets and Air Defense Interceptions

In retaliation or parallel action, Kyiv targeted the Kamensky industrial plant in Russia’s Rostov region, a facility linked to missile manufacturing, while Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin reported significant damage to an unspecified industrial installation following a wide-scale drone attack. Russian defense authorities stated their air defense units intercepted 235 drones overnight, while Ukrainian commanders countered that they shot down 371 out of 433 long-range drones launched by Moscow since Saturday evening.
