Russian Foreign Ministry: Taliban confirmed interest in peace

The delegation of the political office of the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) at a meeting with the Russian president’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, confirmed their interest in achieving peace in the country. The Taliban also guaranteed the security of diplomatic and consular missions of foreign states in Afghanistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Representatives of the DT (Taliban movement. – “B”) confirmed their interest in achieving sustainable peace in the country through negotiations, taking into account the interests of all ethnic groups of the country’s population, as well as their readiness to observe human rights, including women in the framework of Islamic norms and Afghan traditions, ”the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website says. The Russian side at the talks expressed concern over the escalation of tensions in the northern regions of Afghanistan and called on not to allow it to spread outside the country.

Representatives of the movement also declared their determination to fight the threat of the terrorist organization IS (banned in the Russian Federation) in Afghanistan and to eradicate drug production. “Assurances were received from the Taliban regarding the non-violation of the borders of the Central Asian states, as well as guarantees of the security of diplomatic and consular missions of foreign states on the territory of Afghanistan,” the Foreign Ministry said.

A Taliban delegation arrived in Moscow for talks today, 8 July. The visit will last two days. The delegation consists of four people and is headed by Sheikh Shahabuddeen Delaware. On July 7, the Taliban announced that they control 162 out of 398 regions of Afghanistan, because of the Taliban offensive, the situation on the Afghan-Tajik border has aggravated. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his readiness to help Tajikistan.
