At least three people, including a child, were killed in overnight Russian ballistic missile strikes near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, according to local officials. The attacks, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, also wounded three other people, including a child, officials said.
Casualties and Damage in Kyiv Region
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the regional military administration, reported that the strikes caused damage at three locations in the Brovary district, northeast of the capital. The impacts resulted in fires at a non-residential building and damage to vehicles, outbuildings, and a private home due to falling debris.
Within Kyiv, Mayor Vitaly Klitchko reported that emergency crews fought fires at a building and a fuel tank. The state emergency service, DSNS, shared images showing a business, garages, and another building on fire. An AFP reporter in the capital reported hearing approximately a dozen explosions during the assault.
Air Defense Challenges and Ammunition Shortages
The Ukrainian Air Force initially warned of Russian attack drones approaching Kyiv from the north and Dnipro from the south. The threat escalated to the use of ballistic weapons, prompting the Kyiv City Military Administration to declare an air raid alert and instruct residents to seek shelter.
Officials and analysts highlight a critical vulnerability to ballistic missiles, which are more difficult to intercept than drones due to their trajectory and speed. While Ukraine utilizes U.S.-manufactured Patriot systems—some supplied by Germany—the military lacks sufficient ammunition for these systems. This shortage is attributed in part to global ammunition stock depletion resulting from conflicts involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners have led to horrific casualties and destruction,
noting that the supply of interceptors from allies has been significantly reduced
this year.
Pattern of Civilian Infrastructure Attacks
The Saturday strikes follow a series of recent assaults targeting civilian logistics and infrastructure across Ukraine:
- Wednesday: A massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed 17 people and wounded 44. President Zelensky identified targets as civilian company warehouses, a brewery, and construction-material warehouses.
- Tuesday: Russian missile strikes at a train station in Brovary killed eight people.
- August 1: Russia launched 185 drones and 35 missiles, including 27 ballistic missiles, damaging residential buildings across several districts of Kyiv.
- Chernihiv Region: Recent strikes targeted logistics companies, businesses, and critical infrastructure in Novhorod-Siverskyi, Pryluky, and Chernihiv using conventional and jet-powered drones.
Diplomatic and Strategic Context
The escalation comes as President Zelensky arrived in Belgrade for his first visit to the Serbian capital. He is scheduled to meet Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to discuss security issues, economic ties, and relations with the European Union. While Serbia has provided aid and promised to assist in post-war rebuilding, Vučić has refused to apply sanctions to Russia.
Ukraine has recently responded by striking two oil refineries inside Russia and Moscow-linked vessels in the Black Sea. Zelensky stated these actions were intended to limit the oil revenues Russia uses to finance the war. Officials note that recent mediation talks have faltered, contributing to the current escalation of attacks from both sides.
