Geneva: India abstained from voting on a UN Human Rights Council resolution calling for the immediate appointment of an independent international commission of inquiry into Russia’s occupation of Ukraine.

The draft resolution on the human rights situation in Ukraine was approved by 32 countries in the 47 – member Council. Thirteen countries abstained, including India, China, Pakistan, Sudan and Venezuela. Russia and Eritrea opposed. France, Germany, Japan, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States all voted in favor.

The Human Rights Council tweeted that it had decided to immediately appoint an independent international commission of inquiry into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Within a week, India had abstained from two resolutions of the 15-nation Security Council and one resolution of the 193-member General Assembly against Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine yesterday and passed a resolution calling on Russia to withdraw troops from Ukraine. 141 countries voted in favor, five against and 35 abstained, including India.
