Kiev: A Ukrainian court has sentenced a Russian soldier to life in prison for killing an unarmed Ukrainian citizen. Vadim Shishimar, a 21-year-old tank commander, was sentenced to life in prison on February 28 for shooting dead a 62-year-old man in the northeastern Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka. Vadim Shishimarin pleaded guilty. The commander shot and killed Alexander Shelipov.

On Monday, Judge Sergei Ahfonov delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom, which was filled with more than a dozen Ukrainian and foreign television media. BBC News reports that although Shishimarin cooperated with the investigation and expressed regret, the judge said the court could not accept the statement that he did not intend to kill Shelipov when he was shot.

The verdict has now been handed down in the first of several war crimes cases. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova said more than 40 war crimes cases were being prepared for trial soon. In addition, Ukrainian authorities say more than 10,000 war crimes have been registered across the country.
