Russian strike kills two in Zaporizhia, announces Zelensky

A Russian strike killed at least two people in Zaporizhia, a large city in southern Ukraine, according to local authorities, who refer to the bombardment of a residential area. “Zaporizhia: two people were killed and seven injured. Initially, reports reported three deaths. Fortunately, one person was revived,” Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said on Telegram.

The previous death toll of three was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who released a video showing a damaged church, with flames and smoke in its courtyard, as well as another building on fire.

A damaged church

According to regional governor Yuri Malachko, “a church and shops” in the Shevchenkisky district of northeastern Zaporizhia were hit. “The doctors are taking care of the injured,” he added, adding that the windows of nearby buildings were shattered by the explosion.

“The enemy attacked a residential area,” said Anatoli Kourtiev, head of the Zaporizhia city council. This city located a few tens of kilometers from the southern front is regularly the target of Russian bombardments.
