Protesters tried to block Israelis from entering Dagestan airport

This Sunday (29), a demonstration at Makhachkala airport, capital of the Russian republic of Dagestan, caught the attention of authorities and raised concerns amid the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Dozens of protesters invaded the airport facilities, disrupting operations and causing an increase in local tensions.

The disturbances began with the announcement of the arrival of a plane from Tel Aviv, Israel. In a scenario already tense due to the Israeli offensive in Gaza, the arrival of the aircraft triggered protests.

Protesters occupied the roof of the terminal, invaded the runway and tried to control vehicles leaving the airport.

Local security forces responded quickly to quell the protests, resulting in the temporary closure of the airport until November 6th.

The authorities’ action allowed operations to be normalized, and order was restored on the airport premises.

The government of Dagestan issued a statement calling on protesters to end “illegal actions” and respect the country’s laws. Security forces reinforced their presence at the site and regained control of the situation.

The situation generated international concerns, especially in Israel, which expressed its concern about the events in Dagestan.

Israeli authorities asked Russian authorities to take measures to protect Israeli citizens and Jews in the region.

Russia, in turn, announced the opening of a criminal investigation to identify and arrest the protesters involved in the conflicts.

The republics of Dagestan and Chechnya, both located in the Russian Caucasus, have majority Muslim populations and have been historically volatile.

The local Jewish community is in discussion about the possibility of leaving the area due to the growing tension.
