Russia has allegedly developed a top-secret weapon used to disrupt GPS systems on planes and ships, a military expert has claimed. The electronic device is said to be operating in NATO’s Baltic countries – Finland, the Baltic States and Poland – and is causing disruptions in air and sea traffic in the area. Martin Harm, the head of the army in Estonia, revealed that there was a malfunction in the GPS systems of ships and aviation in the area.

Reports in Western intelligence indicate that the system is called “Tobol”, according to reports in the Daily Star. It looks like a dish with a large antenna, and works by transmitting signals on the same frequency that satellites use for navigation, which prevents the devices from receiving a real signal.

Experts have identified at least seven tubul facilities in Russia, but the one in use is believed to be in Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Lithuania and Poland. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited there recently, and according to experts, if he wants to attack NATO, he will start there.

An electronic warfare expert, Dr. Thomas Withington, told the Telegraph that the dish could disrupt GPS signals in several directions and be used to defend Russia against missiles. According to him, the stated purpose is apparently defensive, but this is irresponsible behavior on Russia’s part. He added that this affects the safety of navigation and putting her at risk, but fortunately many of the affected vessels can use alternative methods of navigation.
