Russia’s external debt increased by $11 billion (2.37%) last year and amounted to $478.2 billion, follows from the materials of the Central Bank. In the first quarter of 2021, this indicator decreased by $5.4 billion, in the second quarter it increased by $11.7 billion, in the third quarter it increased by another $17.2 billion, and in the fourth quarter it decreased by $12.5 billion.

The regulator announced that it had increased the amount of debt by $21.2 billion. This was mainly due to the distribution in favor of Russia of holdings of SDRs (the internal means of settlement of the International Monetary Fund). Foreign debt of government agencies decreased by $2.5 billion over 12 months as a result of a reduction in investments by non-residents in sovereign securities.

During this period, the external debt of banks increased by $7.7 billion, including due to the attraction of funds from non-residents as part of interbank operations. Foreign debt obligations of other sectors decreased by $15.3 billion.

The international reserves of the Russian Federation as of January 14 reached a record $638.2 billion, having increased over the previous week by 1.2%. The previous record – $ 630.6 billion – was recorded on December 31. Over the past year, the country’s international reserves grew by 5.9%.
