Russia bans the LGBT movement because it considers it extremist. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation upheld the request of the Ministry of Justice. The hearing was held behind closed doors; Only representatives of the Ministry of Justice were allowed to enter the room.

The session took place without lawyers since no organization bears the name “international LGBT movement” in Russia.

Gay and transgender activists fear it will lead to arrests and prosecutions. The government did not specify what exactly it considers a “movement,” who is part of it, or how it is organized. The scope of the law is still unclear, and critics believe it will be applied selectively.

In the LGBT community they believe that any psychological or legal support for members of the gay community is now in danger. In a speech last year, Putin already said that the West should not impose “its strange tendencies” on Russia.

The decision paves the way for legal action against any group defending LGBT+ rights in Russia.

The judge of the highest jurisdiction of the country, Oleg Nefedov, specified that the decision came into force “immediately.”
