The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution urging Russia to immediately suspend its attack on Ukraine. While 141 countries supported the resolution, 35 countries, including India, Pakistan and China, abstained.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues for over a week. In this context, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for an end to military operations in Ukraine and for Russia to withdraw its troops. The resolution was passed with the support of most countries.
Of the 193 member states, 141 supported the resolution. Russia, Syria, Belarus, North Korea and Eritrea voted against. Thirty-five countries, including India, China, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, abstained from voting on the resolution.
DS Thirumurthy, India’s envoy to the United Nations, said it was “painful” that the situation in Ukraine was deteriorating and hoped that India could find a solution through dialogue. Mr Murthy said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged the Russian president in this regard and hoped that the war between Ukraine and Russia would be resolved through a second round of talks. In view of this, India’s representative to the UN General Assembly, DS Thirumurthy, has stated that India will abstain from the referendum.
UN calls on Russia to end war Although the resolution was passed in the General Assembly, the country concerned was not required to comply with the resolution. However, there will be global political pressure on that country. It is noteworthy that on the day of the resolution, Russia intensified military operations, including air strikes on the Ukrainian port of Kersan and a missile attack on the city of Kharkiv.
