Interviewed on 24 Horas, the Teleamazonas interview program, Ruth Hidalgo, executive director of the Citizen Participation Corporation (CPC), was emphatic in warning that the Citizen Participation and Social Control Council (CPCCS) is an organization that is flawed at its origin and that it does not contribute to strengthening democracy.
In particular, Hidalgo expressed concern about the politicization of the process of appointing the new head of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and warned that the CPCCS has become “a super powerful and politicized body since its creation in the Montecristi Constituent Assembly,” which calls into question the transparency of this key appointment in the fight against corruption.
To resolve this problem, he proposed promoting a debate on its existence or, at least, a reform to limit its ability to elect control authorities, so that its management would focus on the fight against corruption and on guaranteeing true citizen participation.
