To mark the 10th anniversary of the Oscar-winning musical La La Land, Lionsgate has released a revised theatrical poster that corrects Ryan Gosling’s hand placement. The actor previously expressed years of regret over the original, unchoreographed pose, which he dubbed the “La La Handand claimed had consistentlyhaunted” him.
Fixing the “La La Hand”
For a decade, Ryan Gosling has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with a specific detail on the promotional material for the 2016 film La La Land. During a 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Gosling explained that the iconic image of him dancing with co-star Emma Stone captured a moment he wished he could change. The actor, who earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role as Seb, an aspiring jazz pianist, recalled the filming of the dance scene featuring the glittering Los Angeles skyline in the distance.
“We’re dancing, Emma and I, and I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie. We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand [more flat] even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool. I was sure it was cooler.”

He described the flat hand position as a decision that killed the energy of the pose, leading him to label it the “La La Hand.” The Project Hail Mary star admitted that looking at the visual repeatedly made it clear that the intended move would have been cooler. Lionsgate has now officially addressed these concerns by unveiling a modified design that is replacing the previous version across every platform in the world.

The production became a significant commercial and critical success, grossing $447 million worldwide against a production budget of $30 million.

In addition to the updated poster, La La Land is scheduled for a theatrical re-release starting Sunday, August 16. The film will be screened in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres, offering audiences another chance to see the musical on the big screen. Beyond the re-release, a Broadway musical adaptation is currently in development, though a specific premiere date for that project has yet to be announced.
