IAM Union Appoints Ryan Haehnlein as Special Representative for Midwest Territory
A new leader is poised to bolster the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ presence across the Midwest, effective January 1, 2026.
The IAM Union International President Brian Bryant has appointed Ryan Haehnlein, currently the Assistant Directing Business Representative for IAM Local 701, to the position of Special Representative for the IAM Midwest Territory. This strategic appointment signals a commitment to strengthening the union’s advocacy and support for working families in the region.
From Shop Steward to Regional Leader: Haehnlein’s Rise Within the IAM
Haehnlein’s dedication to the IAM began in 2011 as a member of Local 701. He initially forged his path in the heavy-duty trucking industry at M&K Truck Centers, quickly demonstrating leadership potential as a Shop Steward. In this role, he consistently achieved positive outcomes for his colleagues, securing multiple grievance victories and effectively resolving complex labor disputes.
His commitment to the union’s mission led to his appointment as an Organizer in early 2021, followed by a promotion to Business Representative later that same year. Recognizing his growing capabilities, he was further elevated to Local 701 Assistant Directing Business Representative in June 2022. This progressive career trajectory underscores Haehnlein’s proven ability to navigate the intricacies of labor representation and advocacy.
A Champion for IAM Members
“IAM members across the Midwest will benefit from Ryan’s deep experience, steady leadership, and unwavering dedication to working families,” stated a senior official within the IAM Midwest Territory. “Ryan has proven time and again that he is a fighter for our members—at the bargaining table, on the shop floor, and in every role he has taken on. We are proud to welcome him to the Midwest Territory staff.”
Haehnlein’s expertise extends across a diverse range of sectors, including freight, heavy-duty trucking, automotive dealerships, machine shops, equipment manufacturing, and various independent industries. He has also played a key role in enhancing Local 701’s communication strategies, serving as editor of the Local 701 newsletter and contributing to the development of its website and mobile app.
Expanding Leadership and Expertise
Beyond his direct representation work, Haehnlein actively participates in broader labor leadership initiatives. He serves as a delegate and COPE representative to the Chicago Federation of Labor and holds the position of Secretary-Treasurer of the IAM Illinois State Council. In January 2024, International President Bryant appointed him to the prestigious IAM Law Committee, further solidifying his influence within the organization.
His experience also encompasses significant trustee responsibilities, including roles on the Local 701 Training Fund and the 401(k) Defined Contribution Plan, as well as serving as a Trustee-in-Training for the Local 701 Health, Welfare, and Pension Fund.
Haehnlein’s commitment to professional development is evident in his extensive training at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, covering critical areas such as collective bargaining, arbitration, negotiations, healthcare, local history, and mental health. He has also participated in programs offered by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, demonstrating a dedication to staying at the forefront of labor-related knowledge.
This appointment reflects the IAM’s commitment to fostering strong leadership and ensuring effective representation for its members throughout the Midwest.
