Rybakina, Sabalenka to Lead Groups at WTA Finals

Top-ranked Elena Rybakina and world No, according to WTA Tennis. 2 Aryna Sabalenka head the singles groups for the 2026 WTA Finals, which begin Sunday, Nov. 8, and run through November 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Southern California.

The event is being staged at the home of the BNP Paribas Open, marking the first time the Finals will be played outdoors since 2023 in Cancun, Mexico. The season-ending tournament arrives in the California desert following a relocation from Saudi Arabia due to safety and regional security concerns surrounding the Iran war, according to the Associated Press.

Rybakina Leads Heavyweight Singles Draw

Following Tuesday’s draw, world No. 1 and defending champion Elena Rybakina landed in Group 1 alongside American stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, as well as Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Her group includes three of this year’s four Grand Slam winners. Having triumphed at the U.S. Open earlier this year, Rybakina’s goal is to become the first player to successfully defend the WTA Finals crown since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2013-14.

Feeling very excited, said Rybakina. It’s definitely every year different. Now we’re playing outside. It’s a lot of tough players, all great champions.

Pegula is one of the favorites for the title. She enters the event following a difficult travel ordeal involving a United Airlines flight cancellation where she remained on a grounded plane for over two hours in heavy rain, and she has reached five finals this season.

Sabalenka Anchors Group Two

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka anchors Group 2 as she seeks her first WTA Finals crown, having finished as runner-up in 2022 and 2025. Sabalenka secured the Brisbane title earlier this year alongside her Indian Wells triumph in March. She is placed alongside 2018 WTA Finals champion Elina Svitolina, Czech newcomer Karolina Muchova, and Mirra Andreeva, who holds 2025 Indian Wells and 2026 Roland Garros titles.

Sabalenka claimed victory in their sole meeting of 2026, which took place in Brisbane this January, though Muchova holds a slight advantage across their five prior matchups. Svitolina enters the tournament with momentum, having captured titles in Auckland and Rome while reaching another WTA 1000 final in Dubai. Andreeva earned her first appearance at the WTA Finals following a campaign in 2026.

Top Finishers Advance From Pools

Every player and team will square off against the remaining three members of their pool during the opening six days, with the top two finishers moving on to the semifinals. The pairings of Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic, Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko, and Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai round out Group 1 alongside top seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani. Mertens won the title last year with Veronika Kudermetova over Stefani, who partnered with Timea Babos.

Taylor Townsend, who is atop Group 2, and 2026 BNP Paribas Open champions Katerina Siniakova feature in Group 2 doubles. They are joined by Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, Demi Schuurs and Ellen Perez, and Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.

Tournament Matches Begin Sunday

Play begins Sunday, November 8, at 12 noon local time with Rybakina vs. Noskova, followed by Gauff vs. Pegula. Monday’s schedule features Sabalenka vs. Muchova, followed by Andreeva vs. Svitolina.
