10 wins in KBO return season… “There is a big difference between good days and bad days.”
Interested in competing against Puig, who joined Kiwoom… “We will do the analysis again”
Ryu Hyun-jin (37) said to look forward to Hanwha’s mound becoming stronger next season.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who returned to the KBO League after signing an eight-year contract with his former team Hanwha for a total of 17 billion won ahead of the opening of the 2024 season, succeeded in overcoming a slump at the beginning of the season and recording 10 wins (8 losses).
Even though he was the onyl Hanwha starter to achieve a double-digit win, it was a disappointing performance for Ryu Hyun-jin, who had played the role of ace. The team also ranked 8th and failed to advance to fall baseball.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who met at the Cho-A Pharmaceutical Professional Baseball Awards ceremony on the 3rd, said, “There was a big difference between good days and bad days this season. In particular, we need to reduce the number of hits by concentrating on one inning. There were many cases where the atmosphere was suddenly lost when a large number of goals were conceded at once. “We will reduce that next year,” he said.
Hanwha is entering an era of new stadium next season. With the goal of definitely going to fall baseball, I worked hard to strengthen my strength in the off-season. Starting pitcher Eom Sang-baek was brought in for up to 7.8 billion won over four years, and infielder Shim Woo-jun was also brought in for up to 5 billion won over four years.
Ryu Hyun-jin said, “I also have high expectations. Eom Sang-baek has consistently played innings as a starter in recent years. If the starting pitcher is knocked out early, it becomes arduous for the middle pitcher. “Now that we have a starting pitcher who will be responsible for long innings,I think even the middle pitchers will improve next year,” he said.
He continued, “The starting lineup has settled down to some extent. “If we prepare well for the off-season, we will get good results,” he said, adding, “I have high expectations for the new stadium, and I will adapt well starting from the exhibition games.”
He said his personal goal for next season is to appearin 30 games. Ryu Hyun-jin said, “If you are a starter, you must play 30 games. “I think the team’s performance will be achieved within that,” he said, adding,“I definitely want to play fall baseball next year.”
baseball fans are looking forward to a two-hitting matchup between Ryu Hyun-jin and Yasiel Puig next season. The two strengthened their friendship by eating together at the Los Angeles Dodgers of the Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2013 to 2018.
Puig, who played for Kiwoom Heroes in 2022 when Ryu Hyun-jin was playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, returned to Kiwoom ahead of the new season. We will be able to see the two face off next season.
In MLB, they met only once in 2019 when Puig transferred to the Cincinnati Reds, and at that time, Ryu Hyun-jin won a complete victory with no hits in three at-bats.
Ryu Hyun-jin said,“I’m not thinking about it yet. “I think we should meet him,” he said. “I will throw the ball I can throw. “I think we need to do the analysis again becuase a lot of time has passed,” he said.

Dr. Hana Park: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to share insights about the KBO and, in particular, Ryu Hyun-jin’s notable return.
Editor: To set the stage, Ryu Hyun-jin has just concluded his comeback season with the Hanwha Eagles, where he managed to secure 10 wins despite a challenging start. What are your thoughts on his performance?
Dr. Park: Ryu’s performance has been quite remarkable, especially given the circumstances.Returning to KBO after his MLB stint, he faced the natural learning curve while adjusting back to the local game dynamics. It’s important to note that he has emphasized the variation between his good and bad days, which is a crucial aspect for pitchers. Pitching consistency is frequently enough the key to a triumphant season.
Editor: Absolutely! Ryu mentioned that he needs to focus on minimizing the impact of high-scoring innings. In your view, how important is this aspect in maintaining a pitcher’s momentum throughout the season?
Dr. Park: It’s extremely meaningful. when a pitcher gives up several runs in a single inning, it impacts not only their confidence but also the morale of the entire team. For Ryu, he has to find ways to work through those tough innings without letting the momentum slip away. Practicing situational pitching and improving his mental toughness will be essential for him in the upcoming season.
Editor: You bring up an excellent point about mental toughness. There’s also the team dynamic to consider. the Hanwha Eagles are moving into a new stadium next season and looking to strengthen their roster. How do you think this will impact Ryu and the team’s performance?
Dr. Park: The new stadium can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it offers a fresh start and potentially new fan energy, which can be motivating for the players.Conversely, there’s an adaptation period that players need to go through. With the recent acquisitions of pitchers like Eom Sang-baek,the pressure on Ryu can also ease as he won’t need to shoulder the starting duties alone. The ability to rely on a solid rotation could also help ryu pitch deeper into games, achieving his goal of playing 30 games next season.
editor: Speaking of goals, Ryu is looking forward to playing in 30 games next season, emphasizing the importance of this milestone. How does reaching that number impact a pitcher’s overall success within a season?
Dr. Park: Pitching in 30 games often indicates a healthy and consistent presence in the rotation, which is crucial for personal and team success. It allows the pitcher to establish rhythm and rapport with the team. The more innings Ryu pitches, the more experience he gains, which is vital for both his performance and the support of the team.
Editor: There’s also the exciting prospect of facing Yasiel Puig next season, who was a former teammate of Ryu in the MLB.How do matchups like this influence players and fan engagement?
Dr. Park: Matchups between well-known figures like Ryu and Puig create a buzz around the league. It not only rekindles past friendships but also piques fan interest in rivalries and personal stories. Fans love the drama, and seeing two friends competing at a high level adds an emotional element to the game that can enhance attendance and viewership.
Editor: indeed, these narratives enrich the viewing experience. As we look ahead, what do you believe are the key factors that will contribute to Hanwha’s success in the upcoming season?
Dr.Park: Several key factors stand out—roster depth and player health are paramount. If Ryu maintains his form and stays injury-free, along with the contributions from new signings, the Eagles could become a formidable team.Their strategic planning during the off-season will play a crucial role as well. Focusing on pitching consistency and improving their overall synergy will be essential for reaching their goal of fall baseball.
