He Sabadell City Council (Vallès Occidental) has agreed this Monday, January 8, to rename the Catalunya Athletics Indoor Track in memory of Carme Valero, the Sabadell athlete who died on January 2 due to a stroke.
Sources from the council assure that they have contacted the family who have expressed their agreement with the decision. It is expected that the proposal to change the name of the equipment can be submitted for approval in the Municipal Plenary of the month of February and thus change the name of the sports equipment with the name of Carme Valero.
This recognition is intended to pay tribute to Carme Valero, both for the achievements of her sporting career and for her work promoting athletics and sport in general. Internationalized twenty-five times, Valero was twice world cross country champion (1976 and 1977) and a bronze medalist on one occasion (1975). She was also the first Spanish woman athlete to participate in some Olympic Games (Montreal 1976). For most of his career he wore the colors of the Sabadell Athletic Youth.
In addition, she was numerous times champion of Catalonia and Spain both in cross country and in outdoor and indoor track, at different long-distance and middle-distance distances. She was also the state record holder in 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meter dashes. Once retired, she was a director of the Spanish Athletics Federation and vice president of the Sabadell Swimming Club.
