When Andreyeva won 6:3, 6:3 against Magda Linette in the third round on Saturday, she made herself a gift for her 16th birthday and became the youngest player in the 1/8 finals of the WTA 1000 tournament. Earlier, she defeated the US Open 2021 finalist in Madrid – Canadian Leylaha Fernandez 6-3, 6-4 and seeded 13th Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
Sabalenka broke the sensational series of the Russian
This is only the second start in the WTA rank event coming from Krasnoyarsk Andreyeva, the finalist of this year’s junior Australian Open. Last year she lost the first match in Monastir. Thanks to the successful performance in Madrid, the young Russian will rise in the ranking from 195th to around 140th place.
Sabalenka will face Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the quarterfinals. In the second part of the tournament ladder there is the leader of the ranking Iga Świątek, who will play with Russian Ekaterina Aleksandrova in the 1/8 finals on Monday evening.
