Sphatikam is a super hit film directed by Bhadran and starring Mohanlal as the lead. Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Urvashi, K.P.A.C. Lalitha played the central characters. The camera was handled by J. Williamson, with artwork by Watson.
The film’s director Bhadran said that they were not his first choice and he approached Sabu Cyril and Santhosh Sivan first. But later they withdrew from the film without any reason and he said in an interview to Cannes channel that Watson was considered for the film on that basis.
‘Sphatikam comes to mind after two years of going to Hindi with Sabu Priyan. Sabu and Santhosh Sivan were the first choice in the glass. As a cameraman and art director. We had to delay the shooting plan for a month and a half.
At that time Bhadran sir has postponed that film and now he can’t go for any Hindi film until this is finished. It is said that someone told them. You went down very gracefully. Santhosh took Shiva with him when he left.
Then I got angry. A new person was also cast in the next film. I was the one who caught him, this Sabu Cyril—the little boy who walked off the road making a prop out of a small matchstick—and cast him in my picture.
That Sabu Cyril later said in many interviews that such a thing happened. It’s not my problem to say so. Instead I cast a new art director. Crystal in the movie. Followed by Vatsan who only does advertising art. Because I was forced to have a new one,’ said Bhadran.
In 1990, Sabu Cyril entered the scene as an independent art director with the film Iyer the Great directed by Bhadran. Later this partnership came together in his own film Uncle Bun.
