SADC countries record reduction in teenage births

News from Angola – Around seven member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) recorded a Fifty percent reduction in teenage births, per thousand adolescents, from January to November 2023, illustrates the study by monitoring sexual and reproductive health.

The study report Scorecard was presented during a meeting on Reproductive Health in the country’s capital.

According to the report that Notícias de Angola had access to today, twelve of the sixteen countries in the region managed to incorporate sexual and HIV-AIDS education in primary schools, in the order of Ninety-five percent.

The document points out that seven countries have achieved the SADC target of reducing the mother-to-child transmission rate of HIV-AIDS below 5%.

As the report also states, at least three countries recorded significant increases.

The complementary data comes from a joint meeting of the SADC Ministries of Health, and those responsible for HIV-AIDS,

that took place on Tuesday, in Luanda, Sílvia Lutucuta, recognized that the maternal mortality and gender-based violence are at unacceptable levels in the region.

In turn, the Angolan Minister of Health urged member states to redouble efforts to ensure that no woman loses her life while giving birth and that women have access to the contraceptive methods of their choice.

To this end, the governor called for the promotion of gender equality from a young age to be essential.

“Investing in the self-esteem and confidence of young women is essential for them to be able to face challenges in a conducive environment”, he highlighted.

Sílvia Lutucuta said it was the responsibility of all health professionals to ensure that no woman in the SADC region suffered from such violence,

The SADC Strategy for Sexual Health and Sexual and Reproductive Rights (2019-2030) provides a policy and programming framework for Member States to assess their national frameworks, harmonize and accelerate access to Sexual Reproductive Health and related rights.
