Sumi: Indian Embassy launched Evacuation From Sumi Buses with 694 students from Sumi have left for Poltava. Students who move from Sumi to another city, Poltava, will be transferred later. It is likely that these students will be taken to Hungary, Romania or Poland. Clarity on the flights will come after the evacuation is completed.
Ukraine announced a safe route this morning. Then the rescue mission began. No official information has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Ukraine or the Central Government regarding the evacuation of the students. Sources in the Central Government said that information about the route was not provided to ensure the safety of the students.
Earlier in the day, the Indian embassy along with student agents had moved to evacuate the students. According to the Indian Embassy, Sumi had 690 students in two hostels. Three buses and minivans were sent for evacuation yesterday but were stopped by Ukrainian forces. But more buses arrived in Poltava yesterday. These buses now arrive in Sumi and bring students to Poltava. Sumi’s rescue mission can be successfully completed if the children can be brought to Poltava.
Meanwhile, students are still trapped in Kharkiv. But from there, many students reach the Polish border on foot and in vehicles. Yesterday too, 44 students had crossed the border. Today all five students came out in a similar manner. An attempt was made to evacuate students from Sumi yesterday but the Ukrainian army arrived and blocked the rescue operation. But today, it is learned that the rescue operation is going on smoothly.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian media reported that the evacuation of people from Sumi continued. The rescue operation started at around 12 noon Indian time. It is learned that the evacuation is going on peacefully at present. Apart from Indians, students from other countries are also being transferred. Meanwhile, tensions in Kiev are reported to be high. There are indications that a bus carrying people trapped in the city was shelled. Nine people were injured in the accident. Ukraine and Russia have announced a 12 – hour safe exit route.
