Sahara: Kiribati says autonomy initiative offers ‘peaceful way’ to resolve regional dispute

by times news cr

“We see great merit in the promotion of the Moroccan autonomy initiative which has been recognized by more than 100 countries as a peaceful way to resolve the Moroccan Sahara conflict,” said Kiribati’s ambassador to the UN, Teburoro Tito, before members of the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly.

The diplomat also called for the resumption of the round table process in the same format and with the same participants, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2654.

He also took the opportunity to commend the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at facilitating the revival of the political process under the exclusive aegis of the UN Secretary-General, including his two visits to Rabat, the Tindouf camps in Algeria, Algiers and Nouakchott, as well as the informal bilateral consultations he held last March in New York with Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the “polisario”.

He also welcomed the visit of the Personal Envoy last September to Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco, where he met in particular with the presidents of the two regions of the Moroccan Sahara.

The diplomat called on the parties to remain engaged in the UN process in favour of peace, progress and sustainable development in the region.
