Sahara: Papua New Guinea reaffirms its support for Morocco’s sovereignty and the autonomy plan

On the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita had, this Wednesday in New York, an interview with his counterpart from Papua New Guinea.

This meeting was an opportunity to review the state of excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and to emphasize the importance of further strengthening them.

On this occasion, Mr. Bourita indicated that despite the geographical distance, Morocco‘s relations with Papua New Guinea and other Pacific island countries are at the heart of the Kingdom’s South-South cooperation policy, in accordance with at the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

Noting that Morocco is a “reliable” partner of Papua New Guinea, the minister reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to continue to support this country’s efforts to achieve the socio-economic development aspirations of its population.

The two ministers reaffirmed the attachment of their respective countries to respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of States as well as to the values ​​of dialogue for the peaceful resolution of disputes.

In this regard, Mr. Tkatchenko reiterated his country’s support for the sovereignty of the Kingdom over its Sahara and the autonomy plan, as the one and only solution to this regional dispute.

He also highly praised the socio-economic development in the southern provinces thanks to the new development model launched by HM King Mohammed VI in 2015.

The minister also reiterated Papua New Guinea’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his personal envoy for the Sahara in order to achieve a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution based on compromise. , in accordance with the parameters defined by Security Council resolutions adopted since 2007, notably resolution 2703.

MM. Bourita and Tkatchenko agreed to continue and further strengthen their cooperation and coordination within international organizations and multilateral forums and committed to supporting each other on issues on the global agenda, particularly those related to climate change and to sea level rise.
